AKUFFO-ADDO’S 9 DIRECTIVES FOR LPG SAFETY IN GHANA

President Akufo-Addo in the aftermath of a horrible gas explosion at Atomic Junction in Accra on October 7, 2017 and on the advice of cabinet has directed that henceforth the Cylinder Recirculation Model of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution be implemented. According to a statement signed by the Minister of Information, Hon. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid this model means that LPG Bottling Plants will be sited away from congested commercial and population centers and will procure, brand, maintain and fill empty cylinders to be distributed to consumers and households through retail outlets. The statement added that low-risk stations will be designated for the supply of gas to vehicles and the “whole exercise must be completed within one year”. A tanker explodes near a petrol station in Accra, sending a huge fireball high into the sky and causing scores of people to flee. Two huge explosions sent a giant fireball high into the sky above the city at around 7.30pm on Saturday. Scores of people ran from the scene. Some 68 people were treated in hospital for their injuries. “There was some panic and we all just moved away from the scene,” said eyewitness George Agbey. “It was like refugees moving away from a war-torn zone.” Ghana’s deputy information minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said people with “various degrees of injury” were being treated in hospital. GHANA PETROL STATION INFERNO KILLS ABOUT 150 IN ACCRA

Some 150 people have died in a fire at a petrol station in Ghana’s capital, Accra, officials say. The fire on Wednesday night started as people in the city were trying to cope with two days of heavy rain, which has left many homeless and without power. The flooding hampered rescue efforts and may have led to the fire, the BBC’s Sammy Darko reports from Accra. President John Dramani Mahama has announced three days of national mourning to begin on Monday. It is thought that people were in the petrol station sheltering from the downpours when the fire broke out, our correspondent says. A further 25 people have died in the floods, officials say. The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has launched the Passenger Empowerment and Easter Campaign dubbed “Passengers, Speak Up! Don’t Get Killed on the road”. The campaign is a prelude amongst others to scale up road user education during the festive season. The Passenger Empowerment and Easter Campaign is to ensure that passengers aboard commercial vehicles demand safety from transport operators at lorry terminals and also to take active interest in road safety.Passenger fatalities constitute about 23 percent of road traffic crashes ranging from 400 to 600 in the last decade. Performing the launch of the campaign, Minister of Transport, Hon. Dzifa Aku Attivor noted that between 2010 and 2012, about 1,184 persons have been killed as passengers with several others sustaining injuries. One person has been reported dead in an explosion disaster that happened around the Tema Oil Refinery, Tuesday. The deceased who is yet to be identified was running away when an electric pole reportedly fell on him, Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo reported. Godwin Damali, a fire personnel also confirmed the death. Three other fire officials have been injured as a result of the explosion. The fire men were said to be repairing the leaked pipeline when the explosion occured. A fresh pipeline at the Tema Oil Refinery exploded, in what appears to be a second disaster around the Cocoa Processing Factory in Tema. Many other passengers sustained various degrees of injury in the accident that occurred about 1:30 p.m. The Hohoe-bound bus, with registration number VR 5044-14, was travelling from Madina when the accident occurred. A 28-year-old man and his 4-year-old daughter have died after the walls of their bedroom collapsed on them at Aninkruma near Barekuma in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of Ashanti. Kofi Boateng, the father and Maame Pokua were pronounced dead on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after the tragedy on Tuesday night. His wife, who is five months pregnant, and another child were seriously injured, and are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital. She is said to have lost one leg in the accident.
